First level: so after one of the main level buttons are clicked the image and snippet which are actually the feature article will be visible before the user selects from the sub menu. the article will also be reaccesible any time to the user again via the subnav.

Kristy, the fly-out navs do not need their own allotted space. Rather, they can (and are made to) overlap the content column on rollover. This will address the blank middle column issue that you currently have.
